Celebrating National Nutrition Week with Patrika and Nourishing Schools Foundation- Day 1

10 September 2021

September 1-7 is celebrated as National Nutrition Week. The Patrika Group and Nourishing Schools Foundation worked together to kick off a comprehensive conversation around nutrition over seven days.

Each day a nutrition column in various editions of the Patrika newspaper discussed a topic that was related to nutrition. The column also included findings from Nourishing Schools Foundation’s survey of over 2700 schoolchildren in various districts of Rajasthan. The collaboration aimed to make people aware of the factors related to malnutrition and how to address them.

The topic covered on the first day was ‘Explaining Nutrition (Or explaining a Balanced Diet)’. A balanced diet contains different types of foods in appropriate quantities and proportions in such a way that the need for all the nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre are adequately met. In addition, a balanced diet also provides an extra allowance of nutrients to be stored in our body, which can be used in conditions of stress, like illness, injury, etc.

Importance of A Balanced Diet

Consuming a balanced diet helps prevent malnutrition. Promoting a balanced diet was a part of the Eat Right India movement launched by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India with the tagline ‘Sahi Bhojan. Behtar Jeevan.’ A nutritious diet and a healthy lifestyle can play a significant role in young children’s development. It is important to inform children about the nutritional value of what they are consuming so that they can take charge of their nutrition.
