Creating Equitable Food Systems: Promoting Food Security and Health Equity

3 November 2023

Promoting equitable and sustainable food systems is paramount in addressing food access disparities and fostering food security and health equity. These systems prioritise providing fresh, affordable, and nutritious food to individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status or location. Establishing such systems can enhance health outcomes and mitigate health inequalities.

The Nourishing Schools programme serves as a successful example, making significant strides in improving food security and enhancing students’ health and nutrition knowledge. Out impact assessment reports indicate notable achievements, including 63% of students reporting that they increased their consumption of fruits (Assam Endline Report, November 2022, Nourishing Schools Foundation). Moreover, the program has boosted students’ ability to make healthy food choices. For example, in Maharashtra, the percentage of students reporting their belief in their ability to take charge of their own nutrition increased from 80% to 92% (Maharashtra Endline Report, Nourishing Schools Foundation). These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of initiatives prioritising equitable and sustainable food systems in fostering better health and reducing health disparities.

Beyond health benefits, establishing equitable and sustainable food systems can yield positive economic and environmental impacts. These systems generate employment opportunities and stimulate local economic growth while also curbing food waste and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Developing equitable and sustainable food systems is vital for fostering food security and health equity. The achievements of the Nourishing Schools Foundation underscore the effectiveness of such systems in improving health outcomes and reducing disparities. We can cultivate healthier, more resilient communities by prioritising access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food for all.
