Foundational Food Literacy: Creating Lasting Impact in Rajasthan Schools

17 November 2025

Building a healthier future begins with education, and foundational food literacy is a vital part of this journey. At Nourishing Schools Foundation, we’ve prioritised equipping children with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about their nutrition, health, and well-being. Our food literacy programme, implemented in Rajasthan schools, creates a lasting impact by empowering students to take charge of their health while addressing malnutrition and poor dietary habits.

Why Food Literacy Matters

Food literacy goes beyond simply knowing what to eat. It includes understanding how food impacts the body, the importance of balanced diets, and how to make sustainable, healthy choices. In regions like Rajasthan, where malnutrition remains a significant challenge, integrating food literacy into education is essential for breaking the cycle of poor nutrition and related health issues.

Children with strong food literacy skills are better equipped to:

  • Identify nutritious food options.
  • Understand the role of nutrients like iron, protein, and vitamins in growth and health.
  • Adopt lifelong healthy eating habits that benefit them and their communities.

Our Work in Rajasthan Schools

In partnership with schools across Rajasthan and the Food Future Foundation, the Nourishing Schools Foundation has rolled out a comprehensive food literacy curriculum designed for children from kindergarten to grade eight. These workbooks, developed with the input of nutrition and education experts, are tailored to meet the unique needs of the region. Piloted in 20 schools in the Jaipur district, the curriculum has received positive feedback from students and teachers for its engaging and practical approach.

Key components of our food literacy programme include:

  • Interactive Learning: Activities and games that teach children about balanced meals, micronutrients, and hygiene practices.
  • Local Relevance: Lessons designed to incorporate locally available foods and cultural eating habits, ensuring the content resonates with students.
  • Practical Applications: Activities such as school gardening and cooking demonstrations to reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on experiences.

The Impact of Food Literacy

The food literacy programme has already shown promising results in Rajasthan schools:

  • Increased awareness of the importance of consuming a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and iron-rich pulses.
  • Improved hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing with soap, contributing to overall health.
  • Positive behavioural changes in students, who are now sharing their knowledge with their families, creating a ripple effect in their communities.

Empowering Communities Through Education

Beyond individual impact, the programme is helping to build healthier communities. As children adopt better dietary habits and share their learning at home, families and schools are collectively addressing challenges like poor nutrition and hygiene. This holistic approach aligns with our vision of nurturing healthier generations through education and awareness.

Looking Ahead

The success of the food literacy programme in Rajasthan schools underscores the importance of integrating health and nutrition education into the curriculum. At Nourishing Schools Foundation, we remain committed to expanding this initiative to reach more schools and communities, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to lead a healthier life.

Foundational food literacy is not just about knowledge—it’s about creating lasting change. By teaching children to understand and value nutrition, we are laying the groundwork for healthier futures for them and their communities.

Let’s continue to invest in education that nourishes both the mind and body, building stronger, healthier generations for years to come.
